Community Hiatus

Hello. I sincerely apologize for abandoning the community for so long. I am, at the present time, unable to keep caseland going by myself. Because of that, I am putting the community on hold.

If anyone would like to take over and run caseland, please PM me.

Again, I apologize.

Apply to caseland

Episode 4 begins on October 4th, 2011.

Current members: You do NOT need to reapply.

Your journal should be at least two months old and show sign of activity - posts, friends, communities, whatever. This community is all about participation, so please consider seriously if you will be able to participate at least once every four consecutive challenges. That would be one challenge every two weeks.

There are three teams in caseland - teamcops, caseland and teamforensics. For most challenges, you complete the challenges as an individual, but your score is added to those of your teammates for a total score for each challenge. The team with the most points at the end of the Episode is the winner. Unless otherwise specified, any Included Fandom can be used for any challenge where you get to choose which fandom you use.

Please copy/paste the application below and fill it out in the comment.

All teams are currently open for new members.

Name: (username and your real first name if you wish to share it.)
Location and Timezone:
Order of Team preference:

I will process all applications within 48 hours. I will try to place you with your first choice team, however we need balanced teams so you may need to be placed elsewhere. If you really want a specific team, I can place you on a waiting list until a spot is open.

Once you've been assigned to a team, you will be invited to join caseland. Please don't send a request to join after you submit your application, you will be invited. You will also receive invitations to our social community, case_bullpen AND your team community. The Bullpen is where we have social activities and where you can post longer entries for big challenges. Your team community is where you can get to know your team members and discuss challenges, if that's allowed for the challenge.

But, basically, caseland is a community where we try to have fun while competing against each other using our favorite crime procedural shows.

FAQ's for Caseland

FAQs

WHAT IS CASELAND?

We are an interactive challenge community along the lines of whedonland and many others. caseland is specifically focused on television series within the "police procedural" genre. There are three (3) teams - Team Cops, Team Forensics and Team Morgue. Members compete with teammates to gain points. Challenges range from writing to graphics making to puzzles to other randomness. At the end of each phase, the team with the most points is declared the winner of that phase. The next phase usually starts about a month after the end of the last phase.

WHAT FANDOMS ARE INVOLVED?
To avoid any confusion, please see the List of Accepted Shows. If you believe a show is missing, please look at the qualifications listed in that post before commenting with a suggestion.

DO I NEED TO KNOW ALL THE FANDOMS TO JOIN?
Not at all! However, I'm guessing that the more shows you're familiar with, the more fun you'll have with a variety to choose from.

WHAT IS YOUR SPOILER POLICY?
Spoiler Policy!

HOW DO I JOIN? WHEN CAN I JOIN?
You may join at any time, no need to wait for the beginning of a phase. Anyone can join! You need to fill out a simple application to join so that you can be sorted onto a team. Once you've been assigned to a team, you'll receive invites for caseland, case_bullpen, and your team community. (The teams are teamcops, teamforensics, and teammorgue.)

If you would like to apply to be a team leader/mod (and there is a position open), you may apply after you are sorted.

I JOINED, NOW WHAT DO I DO?
You should join all three communities (caseland, case_bullpen, and your team community). Then you should take a look around to get familiar with the comms. Your team probably has an introduction/get-to-know-you post, so that's a good place to start. case_bullpen will also have social posts for all members to get to know one another.

When you're ready to start participating in challenges, you can find open challenges on the sidebar of all communities.

A helpful tip: It is not required, but if may help you to track caseland and/or your team community so that you get notifications of new posts.

WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS OF ME?
You are encouraged to compete in any and all challenges you can - every point helps your team! However, at a bare minimum you are expected to participate in at least one challenge every three weeks. (This should work out roughly to participating in one challenge out of every five consecutive challenges.)

If your participation is down, you will receive a message to remind you and given the opportunity to participate in one of the next three challenges before you are cut from your team. You may always return as you wish, but you will have to reapply for a team.

If you need to be absent from the game for an extended period of time and don’t want to be cut in the meantime, please let me know at the Hiatus or Opt-Out Post in advance.

HOW DO I ENTER A CHALLENGE?
Each challenge will have its own post with details of what is required and when the challenge is due. You will leave a comment with your entry on the Challenge Post. Sometimes comments will be screened so you will not see the other entries.

WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT A PARTICULAR CHALLENGE?
The first comment on every Challenge Post will be a question thread set up by the mod. Please ask challenge-specific questions there.

I AM NOT THE BEST WRITER / GRAPHICS PERSON. DOES THAT MATTER?
Not at all! While there is occasionally voting, participation is what's most important. It's the effort that counts above all, so jump right in! You'll find most people here are just "winging it", and half the fun is learning to do new or unfamiliar things.

AM I ALLOWED TO POST AT CASELAND? WHAT ABOUT MY TEAM'S COMMUNITY?
You will be allowed to post at the social community, case_bullpen, but not on caseland. Why? Because caseland is kept organized by sticking to challenge posts and important messages from the mods.

You are also allowed to post on your team community. Cheerleading, reminders, and social posts that bring your team together are encouraged. If you ever have a question about content you can post on your team, defer to your team leaders.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF MY TEAM'S COMMUNITY?
The team communities are locked to members only, so you can develop strategies and encourage each other to complete the missions and rack up points. They are often used for challenge reminders and help/hints posts. They’re also a great place to just have fun with your fellow teammates; teams often have games and other activities to supplement the official caseland missions.

WHAT IS CASE_BULLPEN?
This is the social side of caseland where members from all teams can come together and hangout. Sometimes challenges will involve entries that fit best in an independent post and you can post your submissions in this comm. Be sure to link to your entry in the Challenge Post or you will not get points.

HOW DO I GET IN TOUCH WITH YOU IF I HAVE A GENERAL QUESTION/PROBLEM/SUGGESTION/NEED YOUR HELP ASAP?
Make sure you have read this FAQ post or the questions thread on the Challenge Post. If you still have other comments/questions/etc., you can drop either heffermonkey or jeweledvixen a line at Page-a-Mod, or PM one of us.

WHAT DO I DO IF I NEED TO LEAVE THE GAME?
Be aware that you have the option of going on a hiatus (a break) if you need some time to breathe. Going on hiatus means you will retain your position on your team. If you truly need to leave, we're sad to see you go, but will always welcome you back.

Please let us know what you would like to do in the Hiatus and Opting-Out Post.

Thanks to spy_land for letting us borrow from their FAQ's in writing this post.

Do you think there is a show missing? First, make sure it fits the requirements below, then make a comment in this post to ask for a show to be added. We'll check out the show and add it if it fits the Community requirements.

Basic requirements:
- Is it a telvision show? No movies accepted at this time.
- Does the show focus on solving crime? The show should be focused on crime-solving/fighting every episode
- Are there themes other than crime-solving that play a primary role? E.g. Although Fringe and X-Files involves casing and solving crimes, they are primarily sci-fi themed and thus are not going to be accepted here.
- Is the primary focus on official law enforcement? E.g. This is not for Batman or Superman or private investigator shows. (I know, sorry. No Nero Wolfe, no Rockford Files.)

SPOILER POLICY

What's considered a spoiler?
+ Anything pertaining to a recently aired/currently airing or upcoming season of a show will be considered a spoiler (Clarification: This means shows that aired/are airing during summer & fall 2010)
+ This includes information about cast members, guest stars, and promo (or behind-the-scenes) videos/images
+ Spoilers come in many forms including images, videos, and text/article/misc. info (including actor/news tweets)

How long do we count something as a spoiler?
This was difficult to decide. We're spread across the world with varying types of web access. What I'm going to say is that you must warn for spoilers for a minimum of four weeks past the original air date. For American users relying on Hulu & network sites, you should be able to catch the episode by then.

Help Post: FANMIX BASICS

Notes: I originally wrote this post for my teammates on scifiland. I have done a quick reread to do some general edits, but if something sounds funny it might because of where I originally posted it. ;)

Hi! This is an introductory post of sorts to help out you potential mixers out there! (Yes, I'm also looking at you there over in the corner. C'mon, step out into the light, it's okay!) I'm in no way an authority in this area and goodness knows I got wordy - Please skim and jump around to areas that interest you. Examples are at the bottom of this post. Song file creation & zipping/uploading/hosting sections are probably the most important things to look at. Please let me know if I screwed up horribly somewhere and of course feel free to ask more questions!

So first up, what the heck is a fanmix? Is it different from a FST (fan soundtrack)? To my way of thinking they're the same, though I suppose people could argue with that. Anyway, in essence a fanmix is a themed "mix tape" and can be based on anything you can imagine. Of course for caseland we're working on fandom-based themes. Still, this leaves a lot open. You could do a mix all about FBI agents (the Behavorial Analysis Unit, etc.), you could focus on a single character (Hotch or Reid, etc.), focus on a specific fandom as a whole (CSI, The Sentinel, The Mentalist, etc.), or even some other crime show theme - maybe criminal-of-the-day? Songs you can tackle-people to? Series by a specific producer?

Where do I start?!?!?! D: First - don't panic! You have SUPER-DUPER TEAMS supportingyou! It's clear from previous interactions here that we've got a supportive, energetic group. We're here to bolster one another's creativity. Don't worry about meeting some imaginary standard, there's not set rules for making a mix - although there are argueably some general guidelines - so you can experiment all you want!

And here we go!Collapse )
